Used to indicate some types of cancer, especially ovarian cancer. A CA-125 is a tumor marker. It is most useful in monitoring progression or recurrence in cases of known ovarian carcinoma. At the present time, the CA-125 test is not recommended as a screening test for ovarian cancer due to false readings due to pregnancy, menstruation and some other non-cancerous disorders. However, cancer screening using the CA-125 test and ultrasound may be done for some women at high risk of getting ovarian cancer (such as women who have a family history of ovarian cancer that is likely to be hereditary).
