White Cell Count - A
count of WBC's which are primarly a defense against infection. Normal values -
Adults & children over 2 yrs. -5,000 - 10,000/mm. Children under 2 yrs: 6,200
- 17,000/mm.
Red Cell Count - A
count of RBC's which have the primary function of transporting oxygen from the
lungs to the tissues. Normal values - men: 4.7 - 6.1 million/mm, women: 4.2 -
5.4 million/mm, infants & children: 3.8 - 5.5 million/mm.
Hemoglobin - A measurement
of the iron containing pigment of the RBC's. Normal values - men: 14 - 18 g/dl,
women: 12 - 16 g/dl, children 11 - 16 g/dl.
Hematocrit - Is the
red cell volume or volume of blood by percentage in the body. Normal values -
men: 42-52%, women: 37-47%, children 31-43%.
MCV - A measurement
of the average volume, or size of a single red blood cell, and is effective in
classifying anemias. Normal values - Adults and children: 80-95cu microns.
MCH - A measurement
of the average amount of hemoglobin within a red blood cell. Normal values - Adults
and children: 32-36 g/dl or 32-36%
MCHC - A measurement
of the average concentration or % of hemoglobin whthin a single red blood cell.
Normal values - Adults and children: 32-36 g/dl or 32-36%.
Neutrophiles - One
type of white blood cell with the primary function of killing bacterial micro
organisms. Normal value - 47-78%.
Bands - Immature
forms of neutrophiles which enter the system and is generally indicative of an
ongoing acute bacterial infection. Normal values - 0-8%.
Lymphocytes - A type
of white blood cell with the purpose of fighting chronic bacterial infection and
acute viral infections. Normal values - 15-42%.
Monocytes - A type
of white blood cell very similar to the neutrophiles. However, they can be more
rapidly and spend a longer time in the circulation killing bacteria. Normal values
- 2-11%.
Eosinophiles - A
type of white blood cell involved in allergic reactions. Normal values - 0-8%.
Basophiles - A type
of white cell very much like the Eosinophiles involved in allergic reactions.
Normal values - 0-2%.
Platelet Count - A
count of platelets which are formed in the bone marrow, the lungs and spleen.
They play a vital role in hemostasis (stopping blood flow) and blood clotting.
Abnormalities in this area can result in bleeding tendencies or hypercoagulation.
Normal values - 130-425 thousand/cmm.
